History

Monsignor Joseph Thekkepalackal and his brother Pauleenj owned one acre family property at Valiyakalavoor situated in the eastern side of Alleppey – Aroor road. Mr. Pauleenj who is a bachelor was a full fine activator of Franciscan 3rd order. He built a hut in his property and stayed with other Franciscan brother, they spent their life in that Ashram. Do to their missionary activities they developed a small group of believers near and around Kalavoor. In 1918, they made a small chapel in the name of St.Joseph for their prayer meeting, that was the beginning of todays church.

The spiritual needs of the society of Kalavoor was increasing day by day. In 1925, Bishop of Cochin Rt. Rev. Dr. Bento Martin Reberio had come to visit and he was welcomed from Odaapuzhi to Kattoor, At that time a group of people from Kalavoor gave a warm welcome to the Bishop and gave a memorandum for the development of the church. When visited kattoor his Lordship gave the responsibility to Rev. Fr. Markose Erssery, Vicar of Kattoor to see about their spiritual needs and to submit a report. His Excellency assigned Br. Joseph Thekkepalackal to take necessary steps to construct a chapel. A building for Catechism was also built and Rev.Fr.Edwin.S.J from Alappuzha Seminary, visited the chapel and offered Holymass. Do to the interest of the Bishop, the Franciscan fathers chose Valiyakalavoor as their Mission area. Brother Pauleenj was the main advisor in this group. In 1948 Br. Pauleenj breathed his last.

The full responsibility of St,Joseph’s chapel was handed over to Rev. Fr. Joseph Thekkepalackal, even after he became the Monsignor and Vicar of Cathedral. He gave his special attention to this chapel. In 1940 the thatched shed was changed to small church and front and side portions were extended. From 1959 the Holymass was offered in this church.

From 1971 onwards Rev. Fr. Marian Jose Pereira was in-charge of the church and offered Holymass on Sundays. In 1974, the feast of St.Joseph was celebrated and the alter was rebuilt under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Marian and the faithful. Every Wednesdays at 3.30p.m novena to St.Joseph was said followed by Holymass. In 1975 Mosgr, Joseph Thekkepalackal handed over this church and property to the diocese of Alappuzha. Mr. Kunjachan Vellapattil donated a Crucifix and it was blessed by Mosgr, Joseph Thekkepalackal during his visit. Mr. Cleetus donated a Nitch for St. Joseph. With the help of Mr. Kunchacko a movie show as released to collect fund for the purpose of buying the Musical Instruments and to have a church choir.

In 1970 for the Parishaners Catechism, Legion of Mary and Vincent De’ Paul Society was started. The Vincent De’Paul Society was approved by the Central Committee in 1975. In the name of Bishop Michael Arattukulam a nursery school was started and Sr. Alice was In-charge of this nursery. It is good to mention that Mr. Joseph Ariappanad donated a flag mast for the church on 17th February 1982. Children were divided according to their age and started to teach catechism.

After the 18 years of long services in Joseph’s parish Rev. Fr. Marian Jose Pereira was transferred on 17th June 1987. He was given a heartfelt farewell by Msgr. Peter Chenaparambil, Sr. Korneliyamma and the Parishanors. After which the following Priests did their services in this church Rev. Frs. Mathew Noronha, Pious Mohan, Martin Karuakyil, John Kurisingal and Thomas Markos Pollayil.

In 1991, Mrs. Molly Albert had formed a Charismatic Prayer group under the spiritual advice of Fr. Martin Karukayil. Every year the charismatic group conducted retreat for the faithful to strength their spiritual life. In 1993 the Catechism classes started classwise Rev. Fr. Thomas Markos Pollayl named it as “Divyadarshan”. A charistmatic group for gents started on 01st march 2001. The Vincent De’Paul society for women was stared under the spiritual guidance of Rev. Fr. John Kurishingal. It was approved on 17th Dec 2002. Due to some unfavorable circumstances the Nursary School run under the leadership of Mrs. Lillykutty Xavier, was stopped.

St.Joseph’s Church, Valiyakalavoor was declared as an independent Parish of Alappuzha Diocese by his Lordship Rt. Rev. Stephen Athipozhiyil, Rev. Fr. Sunny Arackal was appointed as First Parish Priest. In 2005 Rt. Rev. Bishop Stephen Athhipozhiyil laid the foundation stone for priest home and was blessed on 15th Dec’2006. In 2006 February the BCC units started and parishioners were divided into 7 units according to zone to keep the families united and its named as “Snehasamooham”.

Asraya, an SNG group for gents started on 30th April 2006 by the advice of Rev. Fr. Sunny Arackal. The Legion of Mary under the name of Queen of Angels re-started and a “Death Fund” was created by Rev. Fr. Sunny Arackal.

The church compound wall was constructed in 2007 and foundation stone was laid in October 2008 by Rt. Rev. Bishop Stephen Athipozhiyil for the construcation of a new church.

In the month of May 2011, Rev. Fr. Sunny Arackal was transferred and the responsibility of the parish was given to Rev.Fr. Joseph.V.P., Director of Krupasanam. The construction work continued. A Junior Legion f Mary was started on 05th January 2013.

The church work was held up due to financial problem. But under the guidance and prayer of Rev. Fr. V,P.Joseph, a fund raising programme was arranged by conducting various activities and sale of coupons a good amount was collected and by Gods grace our dream came true. The Parishoners are grateful to V.P.Achan because Father taught us to pray and achieve the goal.

29th October 2014 is a memorable day for the people of St.Joseph’s Parish because while the church bell chime His Lordship Rt. Rev. Stephen Athipozhiyil blessed the newly built church in the presence of many priest and religious and many distinguished invites and our very own faithful. We believe that our church is definitely a gift of GOD!!!
